Forman’s Top 10 Players To Watch This Season

via prohockeyfans.com
Here is another copy of my article:

There are many players that have interesting storylines going into this season, but I have composed a list of the top 10 players to watch/due for a breakout season this year. Starting with number 10:

10. Semyon Varlamov – Colorado Avalanche – As an Avs fan, no one has a bigger chip on their shoulder then goaltender Semyon Varlamov. The talented, but injury-riddled Russian goaltender was traded to the Avs this off-season for a first and second round pick. While GM Greg Sherman knew exactly what he was getting in Varlamov, he received tons of criticism for potentially giving up a “lottery” pick in the 2012 draft. However, I have extreme confidence that Colorado will get back to their winning ways this season and Varlamov will be a big part of that. Regardless of how Semyon plays, he will have immediate pressure to win in Denver or else he might lose his starting job to J.S. Giguere. Look for a big year out of Varlamov.

9. Tyler Ennis – Buffalo Sabres – While much can be said about all the moves Buffalo made this off-season, I will look at the young centre and why I believe he is poised for a breakout season. Ennis is on a team filled with talented Centres (Roy, Leino, Luke Adam etc), but Ennis possesses a skill level that will only grow as he gets older. I believe Ennis is poised for a Claude Giroux-type breakout year in which we could see Ennis taking over Roy on the first line (as Giroux did in Philly). Whether or not he puts up big stats this year, I believe that Ennis will continue to grow as a player, and if he finds his way onto the first line it will benefit sniper Thomas Vanek. I believe that Buffalo is a serious contender this year, and amidst all the signings Ennis will become the breakout star in Buffalo. The Sabres have so many centres (Roy, Leino, Adam, Gaustad, Hecht etc) that we could see Ennis move up to LW as well. He had 20 goals – 49 points last year, and I predict him to be around the 60-70 point mark this season.

8. Evander Kane – Winnipeg Jets – Every person in the hockey world is starting to develop Jet fever, and Kane looks to have his best season as a professional hockey player. While the skill is certainly evident, Kane lacked confidence in Atlanta in a city where hockey didn’t matter. However, being in Winnipeg changes things for the young Canadian forward, and I believe that this is the season we see the true goal scoring ability of Kane. Kane went from 14 goals in his rookie season, to 19 last year, and I believe that he will be around the 25-30 goal mark this season. Whether or not Winnipeg is a good team in their first year back, look for a huge year out of Kane.

7. David Backes – St. Louis Blues – The newest captain of the St. Louis Blues, Backes is poised to have an even better year than last season. Backes was the backbone of the Blues last year, and his stats speak for himself – 31 goals, 31 assists, +32. Backes is a fantasy owner’s dream, as he gets just about every category, but this season I believe we will see how much he has grown as a player. The captain, to me, brings experience and confidence to a young forward. Many people don’t believe in giving the captain to a young guy, but that isn’t the case in my opinion. Regardless of age, if a player is ready and leads by example, then he is ready for the captain. That is why I believe in David Backes, he leads off the ice but most importantly with his play on the ice. Look for a big year out of Backes as the Blues try to get back into the playoffs.

6. Chris Pronger – Philadelphia Flyers – Speaking of new captains, Pronger takes the C in Philly with the departure of Mike Richards. But is this really a surprise for anyone? In the simplest terms, Pronger is a true leader in the NHL and his play speaks for himself. Pronger is an emotional leader, he isn’t afraid to voice his opinion towards other teammates as well as voice his opinion on the ice. He has previous experience as Captain in Anaheim and St. Louis, but I really feel that this will be his most important time as captain. The Flyers are a young, extremely talented team (despite the departure of two of their best players in Richards and Carter) and Pronger leads the way as the old, grizzled veteran. Look for a strong year out of Pronger, one in which the Flyers could make another deep run towards Lord Stanley.

5. Mike Richards – Los Angeles Kings – The old Flyers captain gets a fresh start in LA, and many people believe that LA is a serious contender this year. They are loaded with talent upfront and on the blueline, but Richards is an interesting addition to this team and might end up being the missing piece of the puzzle in LA. People are so focused on the trade itself and what it did to the two teams, but my first thought about Richards on LA is the pairing of him and Dustin Brown on the same line. Throw in either Gagne or Dusty Penner, and it turns into perhaps the most frightening line in the NHL. While Anze Kopitar will still run the offense and first line, this is the line that is really going to cause problems for opposing teams. Simply put, Richards and Brown are two of (if not the best 2) hitters in the league, not to mention both very talented offensively. This line has the grit of a checking line, but the scoring of a first line, and will give LA a hell of a two-line punch. Look for a massive year out of LA, and Mike Richards will settle in nicely.

4. Brad Richards – New York Rangers – Speaking of Richards, Brad likely has the most pressure in the NHL right now. The guy that every single team wanted this off-season, Brad decided to reunite with former coach John Tortorella in New York, and people are very divided on how he will do there. New York is an extremely tough place to play in, and as history showed us they made a terrible decision in signing Centre’s Chris Drury and Scott Gomez to long-term deals. While Brad’s 9 year contract is a little crazy for the 31 year old centre, I believe that he is worth all the hype and is one of the best Centres in the game today. The most important factor in Brad Richards will be his ability to play with sniper Marian Gaborik, who really has never had a top line centre to play with in his career. Richards could put up massive assist numbers this season feeding Gaborik, but that will only work if the two develop some chemistry. With that being said, I believe Richards will have a huge year in New York.

3. Ilya Bryzgalov – Philadelphia Flyers – Many people believe that Richards was the best acquisition of the off-season, but for me none was bigger than the Flyers signing Ilya Bryzgalov. The talented Russian goaltender spent the last few years in Phoenix, in which he led them to back-to-back playoff appearances. While that was certainly impressive leading a less talented Coyotes team, Ilya will have massive pressure to lead the talented Flyers back to the playoffs and more. The major flaws for Philly the last 3 playoffs was goaltending – the skill upfront was always there but the goalies seemed to always let them down. The Flyers completely changed their team this off-season (losing Richards and Carter), but I believe no one move was more important than signing Ilya. Look for a big year out of Bryzgalov, as I believe the Flyers are poised to return to the Stanley Cup.

2. John Tavares – New York Islanders – John Tavares is quickly becoming one of the NHL’s elite forwards, as evident with his extremely strong finish last season. John is surrounded by talented and young forwards in New York, and this could be the year we see him in the top 10 in scoring. In his first two seasons, Tavares had trouble at times finding his game and was often criticized. However, the young centre will continue to grow every season and will only get better, which is why I believe that this year we will see John light up the score sheet. Look for Tavares to be in the 30-40 goal range and 70-80 point range this season

1. Sidney Crosby – Pittsburgh Penguins – Last and certainly not least, the player that every single person in the hockey world is following, Sidney Crosby is the player to watch this season. Simply put, Sid is still dealing with Post Concussion Syndrome and everyone is anticipating his return. Sid will not start the season, and who knows when he will play, but everyone is watching daily what happens with him. I believe that Sid will return shortly after the season starts, and he will continue where he left off last season. Last year he was untouchable, no one could stop him as he found himself at 66 points in 41 games, a remarkable pace that would’ve had him around the 120 point mark and far ahead of everyone else. As soon as Sid steps back into a game setting, look for him to go crazy and put up big numbers again. With a healthy Sid and Geno back, the Penguins are poised for many Cup runs in the future. With that being said, don’t be surprised if the Pens go deep this year as long as their two stars remain healthy. I hope that Sid recovers as soon as possible, as he is the best player in the game and everyone wants him back.

In conclusion, I believe that these 10 players are all players to watch this upcoming season. I myself am excited to watch Varlamov in Colorado, but everyone has their own views on players to watch. Feel free to comment/ask questions on why I believe in these players. Thanks for reading

2011-2012 projected roster/lines - Part 2

So after training camp, and the first 2 preseason games, I have adjusted my projected roster/lines for the upcoming season: Here is a look at my initial projections:

Forwards:
First Line: Gabriel Landeskog Matt Duchene Milan Hejduk
Second Line: Peter Mueller Paul Stastny David Jones
Third Line: TJ Galiardi Ryan O'Reilly Chuck Kobasew
Fourth Line: Daniel Winnik Jay McClement Cody Mcleod
Subs: Joey Hishon, Brandon Yip, Kevin Porter

Defence:
Erik Johnson Kyle Quincey
Jan Hejda Tyson Barrie
Shane O'Brien Ryan O'Byrne
Subs: Ryan Wilson, Stefan Elliot, Matt Hunwick, Kyle Cumiskey

Goalie:
1. Semyon Varlamov
2. J.S. Giguere

Part 2 Projections:

Forwards:
First Line: Peter Mueller Matt Duchene Milan Hejduk
Second Line: Joakim Lindstrom Paul Stastny David Jones
Third Line: T.J Galiardi Ryan O'Reilly Gabriel Landeskog
Fourth Line: Brad Malone Jay McClement Chuck Kobasew
Subs: Cody Mcleod, Daniel Winnik, Brandon Yip

Defence:
Erik Johnson Jan Heja
Kyle Quincey Tyson Barrie
Shane O'Brien Ryan O'Byrne
Subs: Ryan Wilson, Kyle Cumiskey

Goalie:
1. Semyon Varlamov
2. J.S. Giguere

Differences: My D and Goalie predictions remain the same, as the Avs are pretty set at the two positions. The biggest decision of the D was the "battle" between stud prospects Stefan Elliot and Tyson Barrie, and Barrie has run away with it so far notching points in both preseason games. At forward, the emergence of Joakim Lindstrom and Brad Malone have changed things up a bit, so guys like Mcleod, Winnik, Yip etc are finding themselves in a dogfight for the remaining spots on the 4th line. The Avs are set with their top 3 lines, so my projections have only been altered slightly. The Avs are home tonight against the Dallas stars, so we will see which players make an impact. Thanks for reading.

Jaromir Jagr - 2nd Stint in the NHL

There's a lot of questions about Jaromir Jagr, but for me what has changed in the Czech forwards game? Everyone says he's too old, too washed up, spent too much time away from North American Hockey - to me all these statements are complete nonsense. Take his first game back as an example - the guy sets up JVR for a beauty PP goal, and then strips the Detroit D and picked the top corner on Jimmy Howard - 1g, 1a in his first game back. Now it is only preseason, and it was only 1 game, but in my opinion nothing has changed in his game. The skill is still evident, Jagr possesses stick handling qualities that are only seen in a few players in our game. He may not be as agile as he previously was, but Jagr can still skate with the best and his stick handling skills put him right into the elite forwards in the league (like he always was). No one is expecting Jagr to play like he used too - winning MVPs, scoring races etc, but for me the expectations are high on how Jagr will perform in Philly. He is surrounded with talent upfront - Claude Giroux, James Van Riemsdyk, Danny Briere, Wayne Simmonds, Scott Hartnell etc - and this will provide the veteran Jagr plenty of room to make plays and score goals. The biggest factor for me is his ability to click with top line C Claude Giroux. Giroux is one of the best Centres in the league, especially in terms of feeding his wingers. The top line of JVR, Jagr and Giroux is going to have a huge year, as I believe Jagr will provide space for the two young forwards to play their respective games. To conclude, for those of you who don't believe in Jagr then you will just have to wait to be proven wrong. To me, Jagr has not lost a single step in his game besides obviously being slower, but the skills are still there. Look for Jagr to have a massive year in Philly.

Training Camp Thoughts - By Player

Semyon Varlamov - The new netminder looks rock-solid in net so far for the Avs, playing extremely well in training camp. Varlamov looks more and more like an everyday starter and this could be a huge year for him in Denver.

Gabriel Landeskog - Not given an easy ride like many assumed he would get, Gabriel is really fighting for his ice out there and we can all see the 2-way qualities this kid possesses. While he hasn't been particular dominate in the offensive zone, Gabriel has excelled playing with Ryan O'Reilly as both players play very similar styles of hockey. I think that Landeskog will for sure make the team this year, but will log time on the third line with O'Reilly and Galiardi to start.

Matt Duchene - What more is there to say about this talented, gifted 20 year old. Duchene looks better every time he steps on the ice, and is showing some serious chemistry with Hejduk and the healthy Peter Mueller to form the Avs first line. Duchene has all the qualities and skill to lead Colorado to the playoffs again, and I believe that he is ready for the C despite his age.

Erik Johnson - Now if Duchene doesn't get the C, this is my next option (even though Stas and Hej have been assistant captains for a while now). Johnson is everything the Avs need in a defense and more, he is the cornerstone and future of the Avs blueline. While that being said, training camp has shown his leadership qualities (despite being 23) and I really think that Johnson will have a great year this season.

Joakim Lindstrom - Not a well known guy by any means, but wow has he impressed everyone in training camp. Seemed a long shot to make the team a few months ago, Joakim has developed some serious chemistry with Paul Stastny and David Jones in which will most likely be the Avs 2nd line this season. While not the most skilled player in the league, Joakim is a very smart player and will benefit playing with the even smarter Stastny. Look for a very surprising year out of Joakim assuming that he keeps his spot on the 2nd line.

Brad Malone - If Lindstrom wasn't a well known guy, Brad Malone is even more unknown to the hockey world. However, the young man has some serious grit to his game and is making serious strides towards making the team this year. He has shown great competitiveness playing on a line with Cody Mcleod and Daniel Winnik, a combination that could end up being the 4th line this season. It is still a long shot, but I would not be surprised at all if Malone makes his way onto the Avs opening night roster.

In conclusion, I feel that training camp has gone really well for the Avs so far. While there are many more players I could focus on, these 6 were really the standout/interesting players from camp. Don't forget to check the annual Avs Burgundy/White game tonight at 6:30.

"C" is for Character

Earlier this summer, I talked about the qualities of a good NHL captain and what teams would be choosing new captains this upcoming season. In the last 2 days, The Blues named David Backes captain and the Rangers named Ryan Callahan captain - two true character guys who are right for the job. Picking the captain can often be tricky, because many people don't see in the locker room and see truly which guys stand out. The obvious choice to the average hockey fan is the best player, ie. when Sidney Crosby got the C at age 21, but unlike Crosby leadership doesn't follow for every top scorer and often times the top player isn't the right choice for captain. First I will look at the Blues and David Backes:

For those of you who don't know about Backes, he is all that you want in a power forward and more. On a team with so many promising young forwards, Backes stands alone as the leader of the group and that is why he was chosen as the Captain. He is a 200-foot hockey player, while he excels in the offense zone with his size and skill, he plays a tough, fast-skating defensive game which makes him so valuable. The pressure might be on his shoulders at first to lead this young team, but with time Backes will quickly become a great leader in St. Louis such as past captains Chris Pronger and Al MacInnis were.

New York Rangers name Ryan Callahan captain:

Now this is the really interesting, but equally great choice as Backes was for St. Louis - in Callahan you get a player that leads by example and isn't afraid to do anything for the team. Callahan has moved his way up from a 4th liner to now as team Captain, especially in a forward group that has Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards on it this is extremely impressive for the overlooked Callahan. He was always known as a gritty, defensive player one who excels on the PK where he can fly around the rink. It wasn't until last year where we saw Callahan's skills offensively, and thus the Captain choice is justified - Callahan is a two-way player in every aspect, and he leads by his play on the ice which is the most important quality of a captain. I really like this decision, and believe Ryan will thrive with the leadership role he is given. Nice to also see Brad Richards receive an A (as well as Marc Staal again). Look for a brighter future in New York.

Both of these players will have a lot of opportunity to prove themselves this season, but will ultimately succeed in their role. I think that the captain brings tremendous confidence for a player, especially these two "character" guys who truly deserved to be captain

The Summer of Tragedy - The Effects of 3 Terrible Losses

It has been a shocking and awful summer for the NHL, where we've seen the tragic death of 3 fighters/tough guys including the latest shocking death of fan favourite Wade Belak. I have tried to stay away from this topic, because each death has been extremely tragic and I don't want to write anything rude/out of line. With that being said, I finally thought it was the right thing to do to pay tribute to these players. Before even understanding how awful the loss is, many people point directly to fighting and blame that as the "Cause of Death" in all 3 circumstances. While no one knows what role it could have caused, fighting is not the problem in hockey and it won't be taken out regardless. The tragic loss of these 3 enforcers were each harder to take in as they happened, the worst being Belak because I grew up in watching him crush and destroy people in Toronto, always with that huge smile on his face. This summer has been a great concern for the NHL and NHLPA, and after losing Boogaard, Rypien and now Belak, something has to be done to ensure better safety for our players. The toughest and most frequent story I have heard in all 3 cases, is that the road to the NHL as a tough guy is extremely difficult, often one that takes a lot more patience and persistence than a normal NHL career. These guys are not go to guys, not your best defensive players, but they go out there any give it all they've got to defend their teammates and lay out the body. Often times these players don't get the credit they deserve, but they always know their place on a hockey team as Belak did for many years with the Leafs. Regardless of the fact, all three of these players all seemed to have bright futures and none were expected to have any issues off the ice. But that's not how things always happen, and we must remember each of these special players by the game they brought to the ice everyday. Tragedy will happen, and sometimes as a fan/writer we don't know how difficult it could be to watch a teammate go just like that, but all there is to do is remember the positives and hope for the best for family/friends/teammates etc. Wade, Rick and Derek were all special players in their own respects, and you can tell how much support all the players have as pretty much everyone has weighed in on each of these 3 circumstances and how tragic it really has been. RIP Wade - you were truly a special player to watch on the ice, Derek - you weren't afraid of anyone and were the toughest player I've ever watched, and Rick - he was just your stand-up nice guy but played an extremely tough game, one that surprised many people. My most sincere apologies to the family, friends and teammates of these 3 guys and hope for a more positive future in the NHL as the season nears (about a month away). RIP Wade, Rick and Derek, you will be truly missed.
