Game #11 - Colorado 3, Los Angeles 2

In a close in-conference game with the visiting Kings, the avs refused to go down a goal and allowed 1-0 and 2-1 leads to vanish before taking the 3-2 lead for good on a beautiful Matt Duchene goal. In a game where Duchene was needed at his best, he stepped up in the spotlight and delivered the game winning goal when his team called upon him and this could be the beginning of an offensive outburst for the young centre. The avs scored 3 goals in 3 different ways tonight, starting with a SH goal from Kobasew, a PP goal by Milan Hejduk and the 3rd even strength by Duchene. While they allowed two PP goals tonight, the avs played a very solid 5-on-5 game and really limited the scoring chances for the talented LA forwards (despite being outshot 32-16). The leagues #1 faceoff team (avs) met a very similarly good team tonight, but were able to win 55% of the draws in 27 of 49 faceoffs. Once again Semyon Varlamov had an extremely good night in net, stopping 30 of 32 shots and only allowing two PP goals - one out of mid air by Parse and the other on a 5-3 PP by Kopitar after making the initial two saves (both not his fault). Varlamov has earned the respect of his teammates after a great first month, but the main positive attribute is that he trusts his defence and that is one thing that we never saw last season - the avs defence play a commanding and tough defensive game in front of Varly, while also jumping in to the play to create scoring chances. Kyle Quincey is really starting to standout on this team, after missing most of last year he picked up another 2 assists tonight to give him 2 goals and 6 assists, but also a 4 game point streak. It is obvious that EJ and Hejda are the top pairing on the team, but I have been absolutely impressed with the pairing of Quincey and O'Brien as not only Quincey is clicking on offense but Shane O'Brien has just been a force around the whole rink. He doesn't seem like he was more than a rough defence in his past, but so far with the avs he has shown serious improvements with his skating and puck moving, really jumping into plays and making great reads on passes. Throw in Wilson and O'Byrne who are the tough pairing, and all 3 defence pairs have not only stuck together all season but have really made room for the avs forwards to use their speed. The lines were shuffled pre-game, and I think they really worked tonight as I was particularly impressed with T.J Galiardi. Returning from missing the last game, he skated with Stastny and Hejduk and really played well at both ends of the ice, something that Galiardi didn't have a chance to do on the 4th line. The OWL line played well as usual, but I really felt that the line of Duchene Jones and Lindstrom was their best tonight, and it paid off with the winning goal off of Duchene's stick. Jones is a force on the puck, and really gives Duchene not only a solid winger to pass to but someone that will create space for him which has been needed in the past. Coach Sacco finally took Kobasew out of the top 6, and I thought he played better in a 4th line role with McClement and McLeod (also paid off as he scored a SH goal). Overall, I thought that this was a very well played team game, one that Coach Sacco should be happy with after two terrible losses.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Kyle Quincey - Has been the avs best D the last few games, and its paying off for him as 2 assists tonight give him points in his last 4 games. As stated before, Quincey and O'Brien have formed a great D pairing for the avs so far
2. David Jones - Stepping into a new line tonight, Jones did more than asked for in setting up two of the three goals. He dumped the puck on the PP which led to the bounce for Hejduk's goal, but made a beautiful pass to Duchene to set up the game winning goal
1. Matt Duchene - I'm sure I, along with all avs fans, have been waiting for Duchene to step up and he did it against the right team. Duchene played a very solid game all around, but was the difference scoring early in the 3rd on a beautiful wrist shot. Hopefully this is the start of an offensive outburst for Matt

Play of the Game: Easy choice, Matt Duchene's game winning goal was just an absolute snipe past Jon Quick. Taking a feed off the boards from Jones, Duchene flew into the zone and beat Quick over the glove. Honourable mention goes to Kobasew for his SH goal, as he took a nifty pass from Landeskog and swooped around the net to tuck it past Quick

Game #12 - The avs play their first game in November on Wednesday, as the Phoenix Coyotes are in town (@930pm).

Game #10 - Edmonton 3, Colorado 1

Two straight divisional losses have quickly cooled the avs hot start down, as they simply couldn't beat Devan Dubnyk tonight. Sooner or later the avs must figure out how to play on their own ice, they have been horrid in 3 games scoring only 2 goals (while allowing 9) and losing all 3 games. In a game where the avs outshot them 41 to 19, won 35 of 55 faceoffs and just outplayed the Oilers they couldn't finish. Coach Sacco finally did some line juggling virtually switching every line except the OWL line. Matt Duchene had a strong game tonight, and he really needs a winger to play with as Lindstrom and Kobasew were simply weak tonight. With Galiardi sitting with an injury, Kevin Porter stepped in and created an awful giveaway for the Oilers third goal mere seconds after the avs made it 2-1, and he just played a terrible game in a time where he needed to step up for the injured Galiardi. Once again another defenceman stepped up for Landeskog, as Andy Sutton hit him high with an elbow and O'Brien immediately jumped in and fought him (Sutton should be suspended). Overall, I thought Varlamov played well but the 3rd goal was pretty weak, but on the other hand your typical Ryan Smyth goal as the former av jammed it past him. After a hot start, the avs have really fell flat in two games and they either need to try some new lines or trade for a winger for Duchene because they are wasting his skill playing with two non-scoring wingers. If a trade isn't happening immediately, and Mueller remains out my suggestion is this: Move Lindstrom back with Jones and Stastny in a line that was great in pre camp, and then that leaves Hejduk back with Duchene and for now Kobasew until Mueller is back, because there is no point breaking up O'Reilly Winnik and Landeskog as they have been by far the best line all season. Before the game I thought that the Landeskog/Nugent-Hopkins matchup was going to be a factor, but Nugent-Hopkins (and his whole line of Eberle and Hall) were virtually invisible tonight and Landeskog was his usual self firing 6 shots on goal and really playing a solid all around game. Another game where the avs just couldn't score, and this loss will definitely hurt.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Kyle Quincey - Kyle picked up another assist to give him 2 goals and 4 assists this season. Missing most of the season last year, Quincey has really picked up his game this season and continues to be a force on the blueline
2. Matt Duchene - Duchene played a much better game today, was strong on the puck and had several good scoring chances just not able to beat Dubnyk. He picked up an assist on a beauty pass to O'Reilly, his first point in 3 games, and went 11 for 14 in the face-off dot. Simply put the avs gotta change things up and get him some better wingers (either via trade or Hejduk and Mueller if hes healthy)
1. Ryan O'Reilly - O'Reilly is really coming into his own in his third season, with 7 assists coming into this game he finally scored his first of the season via a beauty pass from Duchene. O'Reilly has developed great chemistry with Winnik and Landeskog, and once again was the only effective line on the ice for the 2nd game in a row. The other lines are struggling but it will be extremely tough to break this line up

Misplay of the Game: An easy choice for me, Kevin Porter's awful turnover on the Oilers 3rd goal. He shouldn't even be in the lineup, and when he finally gets a chance he surrenders the puck seconds after the avs were finally able to score, a massive blow to the team and to his confidence as he will surely be benched once again after a terrible game

Game #11 - The avs play their final game of October on Sunday, as the Kings are in town (@8pm). The avs need a win at home, and this will surely be a tough game against the talented Kings.

Game #9 - Calgary 4, Colorado 2

Your classic case of to little too late, the avs were outplayed through 2 and couldn't quite muster a comeback late in the 3rd as Miikka Kiprusoff made some stellar saves before Calgary iced it with an empty net goal. Through the first period, the score was tied 1-1 but the avs were badly outshot 21-5. The second saw a little push back, but sloppy play defensively led to 2 goals right in close in which defence were out of place, including a terrible miss of the clear by Erik Johnson to the 2nd flames goal that really was the game changer. Simply put only the O'Reilly/Winnik/Landeskog (OWL) line was good tonight, as Sacco continuously changed the other lines to find chemistry. Right now Matt Duchene just can't buy a goal, he made a few beauty moves and rang one off the cross-bar, but just can't find the back of the net. I thought he was better tonight, but he is really lacking a scoring winger and that is Peter Mueller. While Mueller had no points before he got hurt, he really made Duchene better by having someone to cycle with, and I think that playing Duchene with Kobasew and Lindstrom just doesn't give him that option. If Mueller is going to be out a while, the avs seriously need to look into adding another left winger to play on his line. I think that the OWL line and Stastny/Jones/Hejduk line are effective and Duchene and Lindstrom are missing a 3rd person. Not the best game from the defence or from goalie Giguere tonight, as I felt all the goals (minus the empty netter) were soft, defensive breakdowns. While the season is still early, and at 6-3 they definitely don't need to panic after a loss like this, I feel that they really need to look at obtaining a top-6 winger if Mueller won't be healthy
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Ryan Wilson - Scored his first goal of the season tonight, I really feel Wilson is coming into his own this season. Not only production wise (1g, 4 assist), but he is crushing people with his bodychecks and really implementing a tough attitude that the avs need out of their defence
2. Erik Johnson - Despite a horrible play on the Stempniak goal, Johnson played a very solid game tonight picking up an assist and firing the puck on net for the Wilson goal. Johnson is really logging serious minutes (23 tonight) and becoming the leader on the back-end
1. Gabriel Landeskog - Prior to the game Greg Sherman made it obvious Landeskog isn't going anywhere, and he continues to play great hockey. He picked up an assist on the Wilson goal, fired 7 shots at Kiprusoff, and continued to just play an overall effect style of hockey. It is evident how much Sacco trusts Landeskog already, and he just simply excels with his linemates at the moment which is hard for a young kid 9 games into his career.

Misplay of the Game: Easy choice for me, Johnson missing the clearing attempt leading to the Stempniak goal which really gave Calgary momentum in the 2nd

Game #10 - The avs look to rebound from this loss with another divisional matchup, heading home to meet Edmonton Oilers Friday night (@9pm). Unless Nugent-Hopkins gets sent down after tomorrow's 9th game for the Oilers, this will be the first matchup of the #1 and #2 picks in Nugent-Hopkins and Landeskog, a game featuring some of the games' youngest talent, should be a great one.

Game #8 - Colorado 5, Chicago 4 (SO)

In the second game of a home-and-home series, the avs were able to exact revenge on the Blackhawks thanks largely to rookie Gabriel Landeskog. The young swede forward notched his first two-goal game of his career, including the tying goal with under 2 minutes left. The avs played a dominating game for two periods (despite being destroyed 31 to 13 in the faceoff dot), and a late pp goal by Jonathan Toews seemed to swing things in the favour of Chicago. Going into the 3rd up 3-2, the avs solved their faceoff issues (going 14-4 the rest of the way) but really couldn't get much else going and found themselves tied and then down 4-3 after goals by Mayers (awful bounce) and Hossa. With just under two minutes to play, Landeskog made a brilliant breakout pass and hurried down the ice, where O'Reilly found him streaking alone on the right side as he came in on Crawford and beat him glove side. Going into OT the avs were shorthanded, but after a strong penalty kill things quickly shifted back in their favour as Crawford made 2 great saves on O'Reilly and Hejduk before OT ended. The avs remained a perfect 3-0 in the shootout this season, as both Hejduk and Dutchy missed for the first time, but all of Stahlberg, Toews and Kane couldn't beat Varlamov and Joakim Lindstrom finished it off with a filthy forehand-backhand-forehand move that froze Crawford. While the game was up and down for the avs, they were able to fight back late and finish it in the shootout to remain a perfect 6-0 on the road this season. Despite letting in 4 goals, Semyon Varlamov played spectacular again. Frolik's goal was an awful giveaway by Erik Johnson, Toew's goal he had no chance on the rebound and Mayers goal deflected off both of Ryan O'Byrne's skates before going in. The avs netminder has been tested frequently this season, but really has become comfortable with his defence out there and is certainly proving a lot of people wrong so far. The one thing I certainly didn't like about this game was Sacco's choice of putting Duchene on the 4th line. While Duchene didn't have his best game the other night, and Coach Sacco wanted to send him a message, I believe this wasn't the right call and by the 3rd period he found himself moving Duchene back up. While Duchene is young and certainly deserves learning situations like that, he is the avs best player and needs to play with the proper wingers and proper minutes in order to fully utilize his skill. Not the prettiest game, but the Avs will certainly take the 2 pts and remain top of the Western Conference (and division) at 12 points.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Semyon Varlamov - It is really hard to keep him off the three stars so far this season, despite letting in 4 goals he made some crucial saves and was especially strong on the PK in overtime. I, along with tons of other avs fans, have been flat out impressed by his play early on and I believe he is capable of carrying this team all season long
2. Paul Stastny - Despite a slow start to the season, Stastny has become hot of late and has points in 4 of his last 5 including a goal and assist tonight. He made a beautiful deflection on the Kyle Quincey shot to notch his second of the season, and I really believe that he has stepped his game up recently, which is what Coach Sacco needs out of his assistant captain.
1. Gabriel Landeskog - I can't say enough good things about this kid's game, he hustles, finishes his check, but most importantly thrives in the crunch time that you wouldn't expect an 18-year old to not only be in but excel in. This is his 2nd game tying goal late in the game, and he notched his first ever multi-goal game of his career. I know it's early still, but Gabriel has played simply oustanding and has formed some serious chemistry with O'Reilly and Winnik to form the avs most effective line by far. Coach Sacco continues to rely on him in every situation, and we are really seeing the reasons why the avs took him at #2 this summer. What an impressive game from him tonight

Misplay of the Game - Two terrible plays get the tie tonight, first with Erik Johnson's brutal giveaway on the first Chicago goal and Ryan O'Byrne's double skate deflection that tied it up for Chicago and really changed the momentum

Play of the Game - There are two tonight, Joakim Lindstrom's game winning goal in the shootout was simply nasty, as he has tremendous hands and really knows how to score. However, if it weren't for Landeskog the avs wouldn't have a chance to win and his second goal was a flat out beauty as O'Reilly sent him alone on Crawford as he roofed it to tie the game at 4

Game #9 - The avs head to Calgary for a divison matchup with the Flames Wednesday night(@10pm), as they look to keep their perfect road record alive.

Game #7 - Chicago 3, Colorado 1

In a very uptempo, fast paced game, the avs fell short to the Hawks 3-1. This game was a battle of the goaltender's, as both Corey Crawford and Semyon Varlamov played pretty well respectively, but it came down to a 3rd period goal by Patrick Sharp who put the Hawks up for good. This was a good test for the avs, as they really met an equally fast team and as well a team that is equally effective in the faceoff dot. Colorado won shots and faceoffs, outshooting them 32-29 and winning 31 of 53 faceoffs, but had a hard time beating Corey Crawford. While the Hawks don't have most of their cup winning team from 2 years ago, they still have that core and 3 of them scored tonight in Toews, Sharp and Hossa. This was a close one, but the Hawks found a way to beat the avs on home ice. The avs will look for revenge back in Chicago Saturday, in the 2nd half of a home-and-home series. Tough game for the pairing of Johnson-Hejda who were on for all 3 Hawks goals. Overall not the best game of the season, but once again Varlamov kept them in it.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Ryan O'Reilly - Despite being on for 2 goals against, the young avs C was very effective winning 9 of his 12 faceoffs. His line was very good on the cycle game, but couldn't solve Corey Crawford despite several good chances
2. Ryan O'Byrne - Scored his first goal of the season, and first in an avs uniform tonight. O'Byrne is really starting to fit in this season in Denver
1. Semyon Varlamov - Despite the loss, Semyon played extremely well allowing 2 goals on 29 shots. Both goals were top shelf shots from top caliber players - Sharp and Toews. Semyon is really keeping the avs in games in this early season, and looks to be a solid goaltender for the future

Misplay of the Game - The avs 5-man unit that was out for the game winning goal gets it this game, as they allowed sharp to walk in and snipe over Varly's shoulder on a total meltdown by all 5 players

Play of the Game - Semyon Varlamov gets it for absolutely robbing Markus Kruger of his first NHL goal (click on the Varlamov picture on the left side of my blog for the replay). Kane made a nifty move at the blueline and fed Kruger for an open net, as Varlamov slid across and got his glove on it for the early candidate of save of the year

Game #8 - The avs get a shot at redemption, meeting the Blackhawks in Chicago Saturday night (@830 pm).

Game #6 - Colorado 3, Toronto 2 (OT)

The avs set out on this 5-game road trip looking to build off a disappointing home-opener, 5 games later they sit at 5-1 and finished a perfect 5-0 on their trip. I got to witness the game first hand, and it was my first chance to see the avs play in over 5 years. I had a great time at the game, but was even happier as I watched David Jones put in the ot goal to give the avs the victory. Tonight I thought the avs played a tremendous game, outplaying Toronto in every aspect (except shots) in a very defensive game. Giggy was solid tonight making 27 saves on 29 shots, and I felt that he was extremely well supported by the avs defence tonight. They were extremely physical (with Ryan Wilson dishing out several massive hits), and they protected Giggy very well. On the offence, I felt that the avs had a very solid 4-line attack, one in which they dominated in the cycle game and most importantly on faceoffs (39 out of 61). Tonight was my first chance at seeing some of the young avs core, and they all played extremely well. It was unreal to watch Duchene and Landeskog play, as the youngsters were both awesome to see in person. The previous avs game I saw, only Stastny and Hejduk were still on the team so it was a lot different this time around. Tonight they also played two former players in John Michael Liles and Phillipe Dupuis, but it was J.S Giguere getting the last laugh against his former team with the win. While Giggy hasn't been too busy in both his first two starts, he has walked away with 2 wins and it must give him some confidence - confidence he lacked his whole time in Toronto. Overall, not 1 player stood out tonight (besides seeing my favourite player Matt Duchene for the first time) as I felt it was a very impressive team win, one in which Coach Sacco should be thrilled about. The avs now sit at 5-1, top of the NHL at 10 points and they should feel great after this road trip.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Erik Johnson - I was able to see E.J last year in a leafs/blues game, but this time around he was much more noticeable and he is really becoming the defence the avs needed. Johnson is calm and collected with the puck, and just is a force at both ends. He fed Hejduk on the avs 2nd goal
2. Milan Hejduk - Despite 2 early penalties, Hejduk had a very solid game and scored on a nifty powerplay goal. Hejduk, 33, is the avs oldest player but is showing no signs of slowing down, as he still has that sniper mentality and knows how to score
1. David Jones - For the 2nd straight game, Jones walks away with the first star. The avs forward started slow, but has really responded on the 2nd half of this trip tallying 4 goals in 3 games - including the winner in ot tonight. Jones was able to get a piece of Kyle Quincey's point shot, and he followed the rebound and buried it past Reimer for the ot goal

Misplay of the Game - While Giggy played great tonight, he got caught deep in his net on the Kessel goal. I feel that Varlamov wouldn't have let this one in, as he always is at the top of his crease compared to Giggy who likes to play a little deeper

Play of the Game - In a game of no serious individual efforts or spectacular plays, the play of the game goes to David Jones for scoring the ot goal and completing the perfect 5-0 road trip

Game #7 - After a perfect 5-0 road trip, the avs head home to meet the Chicago Blackhawks (@9pm) in the first of a home-and-home series.

-Joel Forman - Colorado Avalanche News

Game #5 - Colorado 6, Montreal 5 (SO)

While this game ended in a shootout, the first 60 minutes was much more of one as the teams combined for 10 goals on 73 shots - but the ending result was the same as all games on this road trip, the avs found a way to win and they have now won 4 straight since losing at home on opening night. This game seemed to be dominated by the offenses, as both teams were outworking their respective defences and both goalies (Price and Varlamov) paid the price allowing 5 goals each. With that being said, the avs definitely weren't at their best as they blew three 1 goal leads in this game (1-0, 3-2, 4-3) as well as allowing 2 goals in 20 seconds late in the third. However, as evident in this early season, the avs will not quit on games and found a way to claw their way back late in the third. Erik Johnson made a beautiful play to keep the puck in, fed Hejduk who swooped around the net and found a streaking Kyle Quincey who sent a beauty slapper off the far post and past Price. Overtime solved nothing, and the shootout provided the same result as it did the other night in Columbus - both Hejduk and Duchene scoring near exact same goals as they did (Duchene's was identical) before. The avs are now 2-0 in shootouts, and have scored on all 4 attempts. While this game certainly wasn't the best played by the avs defence, the offense was really effective as Stastny finally scored his first of the season as well as Davy Jones netted 2. Stastny made a nifty play poking it away from PK Subban on route to a breakaway, slipping it through Price's pads. David Jones seems to have regained his scoring touch, scoring twice including a beautiful goal on the PP from a nifty Erik Johnson pass. Erik Johnson is really coming in to his own here in Denver, it may have not been evident while the avs were struggling last year but this year is a different story - the young D is really showcasing the skill that made him the first overall pick in 2006. I know it is early, and he's been with the team less than a year, but I really feel he has developed into the team's true leader and will be wearing the C very shortly. Overall this wasn't the best game for the avs but they found a way to walk away with 2 points, and Coach Sacco should be thrilled about that.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Paul Stastny - While he has been off to a slower start then wanted, Stastny played excellent in this game scoring his first of the season and assisting on another. While Stastny hasn't showed up on the scoresheet at all times this season, his play is extremely solid as he is one of the best two-way forwards in the game
2. Erik Johnson - Johnson has played extremely well this season, but tonight he was simply at his best. He chipped in with 2 assists, including a gorgeous feed to David Jones, as well as a great play to keep the puck in leading to the Quincey game-tying goal
1. David Jones - He started slow in the first few games, but has now scored 3 goals in his last 2 games including 2 goals and an assist in this game. Jones had a team-high 27 goals last year (tied with Dutchy) and looks to build off a career year

Play of the Game: The game tying goal, as Johnson made a terrific play to keep the puck in, feeding Hejduk who made a beauty pass to feed Quincey as he buried it past Price to make it 5-5 late

Misplay of the Game: The avs D letting two goals in 20 seconds in the third, especially Ryan O'Byrne for letting his man go as Desharnais beat him to the net and tipped it past Varly

Game #6 - The Avalanche meet the undefeated Leafs in Toronto tonight (Monday @7pm). This is going to be a great game, as yours truly will be in attendance at the ACC and couldn't be more excited. All of my family and friends are leafs fans, including my pops who I will be going with, and I can't wait to see the avs live as it has been almost 4 years since I have.

Game #4 - Colorado 7, Ottawa 1

What a complete team effort tonight against former avs netminder Craig Anderson, as everyone was chipping in en route to a 7-1 torching of the sens. Everything was going in the avs favour tonight, they scored goals, skated hard and played a complete team game, one in which Coach Sacco will be extremely thrilled about. The Avs got to an early 0-1 defecit, on a pp goal from Milan Michalek, but after that point they really took control. The powerplay finally woke up tonight, and man was it effective scoring 4 goals on 6 attempts (Hejduk, Duchene, Jones and Lindstrom all tallying goals). While they allowed 1 powerplay goal, their first of the season, they also were able to score their first short-handed goal by the stick of Daniel Winnik. The 7 avs goals in order were: Hejduk, Landeskog (gwg), Lindstrom, Duchene, Winnik, Jones and Lindstrom (2). With Peter Mueller taking the night off (given rest for back-to-back games to prevent injury), Joakim Lindstrom finally got a chance to prove his stuff and was he spectacular tonight - scoring twice including the 7th goal with an absolute rocket top cheese. Centre's Matt Duchene and Paul Stastny had their best games of the season, in particular Duchene who finally scored his first goal (while picking up an assist as well). Duchene is a force on the puck, not only is his speed and skill evident every time he has the puck, but he has developed some serious strength and really creates a tough match up for defenders trying to knock him off the puck. Four games in, this is the 4th time I have said this: the O'Reilly/Landeskog/Winnik line was absolutely the best line on the ice once again, as Landeskog scored his 2nd goal of his career (and picked up an assist), Winnik scoring shorthanded, and lastly Ryan O'Reilly picking up 3 helpers. I can't say enough good things about this line, they control the puck and cycle it so well, makes it so hard for the opposition to even get the puck from them. This is by far Coach Sacco's favourite line, as you already see his trust in the young Landeskog 4 games in - using him on the pp, short-handed and just trusting him with every situation. You'd think the 18 year old would get fazed by this much work, but Landeskog simply shows why he is NHL ready and him and O'Reilly is really turning into a dynamic duo (with Winnik pitching in and really making a scary good checking line). The defence played another tremendous game, with 3 of 6 defence picking up points - all assists (Johnson 2, Wilson 2, and O'Brien 1). It may be early, but the avs are just outworking every team they play, and their defence is a very important part of that because they are very tough - a part of last year's team that just was never evident. Simply put, the Avalanche dominated this game and former teammate Craig Anderson, firing 39 shots on goal to the Sens 16. While Giguere wasn't tested much, he was effective when called upon and he came away with his first W as an av. This by far was the best game of the season, as the avs solved their low scoring problems and pp problems in one. I was extremely impressed at Ryan Wilson's sticking up for Gabriel Landeskog, after he got absolutely flattened by Smith, Wilson stepped right in and dropped the gloves - excellent display of teamwork and just responsibility in stepping up for the young Gabriel. The avs have now won 3-straight on this season-high 5 game road trip, and Coach Sacco has to be smiling tonight.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Ryan O'Reilly - There are so many players to choose from tonight (I unfortunately am leaving Joakim Lindstrom off the 3 stars, but his 2 goals surely will keep him in the lineup), but O'Reilly really was a force all game long. His line was once again the best on the ice, and I really feel he is having a huge effect on the rise of Gabriel Landeskog
2. Gabriel Landeskog - Speaking of the young forward, he once again was one of the best (if not the best) player on the ice tonight. Landeskog is really coming into his own, as he scored for the second straight game and assisted on Duchene's goal. Coach Sacco is really putting trust into the 18-year old swede, and it is paying off nicely.
1. Matt Duchene - While I thought Dutchy has looked good in every avs game so far, tonight he was simply at his best. He finally was able to score, roofing one past former teammate Craig Anderson and also picking up an assist. Duchene is really developing into a superstar, as he is simply dominant with the puck and showcases speed that only a few in the NHL can compare to. Not only that, but Duchene has learned how to be a complete player by becoming great on face-offs but most importantly chipping in defensively

Play of the Game: So many goals to pick from, but for me Duchene's first of the season was an absolute beauty. O'Reilly and Landeskog dug for the puck down low, and eventually got it out front to a wide open Duchene who patiently waited for Anderson to go down and roofed it top corner

Game #5 - The Avalanche look to make it 4 road wins in a row when they meet the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday (@7pm)

-Joel Forman - Colorado Avalanche News

Game #3 Colorado 3, Columbus 2 (SO)

It may have been one of the luckier goal's for a rookie, but Gabriel Landeskog sure was jumping for joy after scoring his first NHL goal. Landeskog's "deflection" (off his skate) was the tying goal that sent the game to overtime, and the avs finished it off from there in the shootout. In a very back-and-forth type game, Colorado found themselves pouring on the shots in the 3rd but still being down 2-1, and it wasn't until the final minute where they were fortunate enough to tie the game. T.J Galiardi got things started off, knocking a rebound past Steve Mason in the 1st to give the avs a 1-0 lead. In the first 40 minutes, the avs seemed to be getting outplayed and the play of Semyon Varlamov held them in it once again. If it weren't for an awful giveaway by Jay McClement, the avs would have kept control of this game. However, early in the 2nd he turned the puck over at the blueline to the last person you want to - Rick Nash, and he capitalized on his own rebound to make it 1-1. The Blue Jackets poured the shots on in the first two frames, out-shooting the avs 11-7 in the 1st and 19-7 in the 2nd for a total of 30-14 after two, and Varlamov was a huge reason the score remained 1-1 after the Blue Jacket's onslaught of shots. Once again an early period goal got to the avs, as Radek Martinek fired a point shot past Varlamov a minute into the 3rd, in what turned out to be their only shot of the period. The point shot seemed to elude Varlamov, slipping under his arm and into the net. From then on the avs kicked it into high gear and really fired back, out-shooting them 16-0 after Martinek's goal, but they couldn't beat Steve Mason. Finally Jan Hejda's point shot hit a jumping Landeskog with 41 seconds left in the game, as Varlamov was watching from the bench with the 6th skater on. What a great sight to see Gabriel score his first goal, and man was he overjoyed - he jumped up in the air over and over as his teammates mauled him. Overtime solved nothing, and the avs relied on snipers Milan Hejduk and Matt Duchene to put things away as they both scored in the shootout (Nash scored first, then Prospal/Carter both missed). While Varlamov certainly stood on his head through 40, the avs offence responded very well in the 3rd and was able to walk away from Columbus with the two points. For the 3rd straight game, I really felt the O'Reilly/Landeskog/Winnik line was the best out there, they seem to know where each other are and have developed a very effective cycle/grinding game. The Duchene line was okay tonight, but I really feel that the Stastny line was missing something tonight and I believe it's time to throw back Joakim Lindstrom on that line. Lindstrom/Stastny/Jones was extremely effective in camp, and I think that Chuck Kobasew just doesn't fit on that line. The defence had another solid game, but in particular Hejda/Johnson pairing were really effective tonight. Not much has been noted about Jan Hejda in the past, but I really feel he is thriving playing with EJ as Johnson continues to get better every game. While coach Sacco has not chosen a captain yet, after 3 games it is evident to me that Johnson is the leader of this team and I really feel that he will be chosen once Sacco decides. Johnson may not have showcased all his skill in St. Louis, but he is surely showing it now as he simply is a force on and off the puck, but especially with the puck tonight I thought he was very effective and controlling. Once again the PK was extremely effective, as they haven't let up a PP goal yet this season - however they haven't scored a PP goal yet either and it definitely is something to improve on. Congrats to Gabriel on his first NHL goal!
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Jan Hejda - Jan picked the game against his former squad to play his best, as he was very active tonight and fired the puck on Landeskog's first goal. He logged just over 25:00 minutes of icetime paired with Erik Johnson, in which has emerged as the avs first line d.
2. Semyon Varlamov - Had Landeskog not scored his 1st NHL goal, Semyon would be walking away with his 3rd straight 1st star. Regardless, I thought he was the best av on the ice for a 3rd game in a row, as he really weathered the storm in the first two periods and gave the avs the chance they needed to win the game
1. Gabriel Landeskog - It wasn't pretty, but what a great sight to see Gabriel score his first ever goal - and even greater to see how pumped he was. Not only that, but he was able to tie the game late in the 3rd and give them all the opportunity to walk away with 2 pts. Gabriel has played unbelievable so far (really developing chemistry with O'Reilly and Winnik) and tonight his hard work payed off. Congrats Gabriel!

Misplay of the Game: McClement's brutal turnover that led to Rick Nash's goal to tie the game

Play of the Game: Obvious choice, Landeskog's first NHL goal tied the game and sent it to OT

Game #4 - The Avs meet the Senators in Ottawa tomorrow night (@7:30), where they will face former Avalanche netminder Craig Anderson. This game will surely be a great one

Game #2 - Colorado 1, Boston 0

It may be only 2 games into the season, but I can't say enough good things about how the "new" look avs are playing - in particular goaltender Semyon Varlamov. While GM Greg Sherman took enough criticism in trading for Varlamov this offseason, the young Russian goaltender has looked spectacular in his first two starts making 66 saves on 68 shots. Varlamov was spectacular in the first game against the wings, keeping the avs in the game when they needed him most, but the offense couldn't muster anything against Ty Conklin. Fast forward to today's game, and the avs found themselves in a similar situation with Varlamov playing even better but nothing again on the scoresheet. Things quickly changed in the third when Milan Hejduk took the puck along the boards, and beat a screened Tuuka Rask to give the avs the 1-0 lead and first goal of the season. Varlamov continued to find answers to the bruins attack, including making 2 nice saves on Brad Marchand. But the play of the game came on a cross-crease sprawling blocker save on Milan Lucic late in the 3rd. Varlamov is so quick on his feet, and he is a very aggressive goalie - he showed both of those traits today and was simply spectacular again. The avs may have been a weak team on defence last year, but that isn't the case anymore as the avs bolstered up their d with Jan Hejda, Shane O'Brien and a returning Kyle Quincey. In total, the avs have 5 d 6"2 and over (Quincey, Hejda, O'Brien, O'Byrne and Johnson) with the last defence Ryan Wilson the shortest at 6"1. So far, the avs have been very tough in front of Semyon Varlamov, allowing little traffic and rebounds, but most importantly providing a physical presence that has been non-existent for a long time in Denver. While I could talk about how good Erik Johnson was once again (as I did last game), I will shift my focus on Shane O'Brien. Brought in to provide some toughness and grit, O'Brien has simply been a complete surprise as not only his defensive play has been great but he has been chipping in offensively. He has been very active jumping into the plays, making smart defensive reads and most importantly passing the puck very well. On forward, I felt that the Duchene-Hejduk-Mueller line was much better today, as they created the game's lone goal. Again, the O'Reilly-Winnik-Landeskog was the best line on the ice, as they are really developing some chemistry and just playing a very hard-working game all together. This was a complete win by a team that looks completely different from last year, and I attribute Joe Sacco for really developing some fight in his players so far. Overall, I felt that the avs have played 2 extremely good hockey games and will look to build on that as they continue on their road trip. Congrats to Semyon Varlamov for his first W in an avs uniform with a 30-save shutout
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Shane O'Brien - Has been a great surprise on the avs d, I felt that he was extremely strong today not only defensively but chipping in offensively and making great breakout passes
2. Milan Hejduk - Scored the lone goal of the game and first of the avs season, simply put Hejduk is a sniper and has shown no signs of slowing down even as the avs oldest player
1. Semyon Varlamov - Best player on the ice for the 2nd game in a row, Semyon really looks comfortable playing in Colorado with the d infront of him. The avs are providing excellent support for the Russian goaltender, and I know it's still early but I really feel that Semyon has been absolutely spectacular in net so far. 30-save shutout earned him first star no question

Play of the Game - Semyon Varlamov's sprawling blocker save on Milan Lucic, secured the win for the avs late in the 3rd

Game #3 - Avalanche travel next to Columbus to meet the Blue Jackets on Wednesday night (@7pm), lead by Rick Nash and Jeff Carter

Jaromir Jagr – A World Class Competitor

Via prohockey-fans.com, here is my latest published article on Flyers Forward Jaromir Jagr:

On the eve of the start of the NHL season, the Philadelphia Flyers were on hand to watch the Boston Bruins raise their Stanley Cup Banner. While most of the focus was on the defending champs, things quickly shifted to the Flyers as they walked out of Boston with a 2-1 win and first 2 points of the season. For me, all eyes were on #68 in orange and white, Jaromir Jagr. The Czech forward was gearing for his first NHL game since leaving to the KHL after the 07/08 season, and to many it is still extremely weird seeing him dress for Philadelphia. The world class player, Jagr spent a majority of his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, perennial rivals of the Flyers for many years. Jagr was 1 half of a duo that perhaps was the best 1-2 punch in NHL history (aside from Gretzky/Messier) – paired with Mario Lemieux, the two were unstoppable in leading the Pens to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. There is so much that I have to say about Jagr, but I believe his play on the ice speaks for himself – at age 39 Jagr still looks like his old self and the skill has not disappeared whatsoever. While he doesn’t have the Hall of Fame cast he had in Pittsburgh (Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Paul Coffey, Joe Mullen, Larry Murphy, Rick Tocchet and Bryan Trottier ), Jagr is the old guy in a group of extremely young and talented forwards in Philadelphia and looks to make an impact immediately. The most important thing for Jagr is his ability to click with top line players Claude Giroux and James Van Riemsdyk, both whom are the cornerstones of this young Flyers team. For me, their isn’t a lot of players that excite me as much as watching Claude Giroux, the young center is among the smartest in the game and his ability to read plays and make passes is amongst the NHL’s elite. Throw in Jagr and JVR, and the Flyers top line becomes awfully scary for teams to play against. Jagr is scary good at finding the openings, while he isn’t as fast and flashy as he once was he still has that lethal shot and more importantly has the ability to find the spaces to get open and that is what makes playing with Giroux amazing to watch. A lot of people had questions concerning Jagr – would he be able to skate in the “new” NHL, would he still be able to score, would he be able to keep up with a young flyers team etc. However, the most frequent question would be how would Jagr adapt to the NHL after playing in Russia the last few years. Many people don’t think Jagr will be as good, but for me those people are just simply wrong. Jagr may not be the fastest anymore, but the talent just doesn’t disappear and this is why I am extremely confident in Jagr producing this year. He picked up an assist last night for his 1600 NHL point, a milestone in which only 8 other players have reached before (Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Gordie Howe, Ron Francis, Marcel Dionne, Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux and Joe Sakic). Jagr is 260 points ahead of the next active player in the NHL (Teemu Selanne at 1340), and trails Joe Sakic by 40 points to become 8 th all-time. While it is clearly a no-brainer that Jagr is in the class as the players listed above, he still has shown no signs of slowing down and will likely pass Sakic by season’s end. No one is expecting any MVPs or scoring races out of Jaromir, but for me the expectations are extremely high and I believe he is capable of producing 50-70 points playing with Giroux and JVR. Not only do I have extreme confidence in Jagr, but I believe he makes Giroux that much better and we could be seeing a monster year out of him. Philadelphia Flyers fans and players are extremely happy to have such a world class competitor in their organization, and for me just having the man back in the NHL is a truly great thing. Jaromir Jagr is and always will be one of the best hockey players of all-time, and anyone that doubts him this year will just be proven wrong by his play on the ice. Thanks for reading!

Game #1 - Detroit 3, Colorado 0

While the scoreboard reads in favour of the wings, the avs certainly should not be disappointed after last night's opening game. While the avs took several bad penalties, their penalty kill was rather solid (a place where the avs suffered last season). The game was decided by 2 beautiful goals, by Franzen and Zetterberg, 2 goals that most goalies in the NHL would have a problem stopping. Aside from the fact that the avs lost, I thought that Semyon Varlamov looked extremely sharp in his avs debut, stopping 36 of 38 shots. Matt Duchene had a very strong game, the center looks so dominant in the faceoff circle going 10-14 (the avs struggled last year on the draw, and they were great last night winning 62% - 34 of 55 draws). To go along with that, the first line of him, Mueller and Hejduk played a very solid game on the cycle and just came short of scoring several times. Erik Johnson also looked very strong out there, showing signs of why he was the first overall pick. Johnson was very commanding with the puck, looked strong on the pp, but most importantly just calmed and slowed down the play when the avs needed him most. While the line of Stastny-Jones-Kobasew was alright, I felt that the 3rd line was the avs best line. Gabriel Landeskog looked very strong in his nhl debut, throwing 5 shots at net and a few hits, he looked good with Ryan O'Reilly and Daniel Winnik. O'Reilly really is a spectacular player, one that goes unnoticed but does all the little things right, and that's why I feel Landeskog fits well on his line because they both are 200-foot players. While at times Landeskog looked a bit shaky, he was definitely one of the better players on the ice. Other new acquisitions include Jan Hejda, Shane O'Brien and Chuck Kobasew. I thought that O'Brien played a very solid game on defence, he was jumping into the play and playing tough in front of Varlamov. Hejda had a good game, he just made a terrible play on the 2nd wings goal trying to keep it in and not retrieving the puck. Kobasew had some jump on the 2nd line, and looks to make a solid addition to the avs forwards. Overall, I felt that the avs looked very good despite a 3-0 loss, and I feel they can build off of this.
Avalanche Three Stars:
3. Matt Duchene - Forward looks very comfortable at the center position, winning most of his draws and just a force on the puck all night long.
2. Gabriel Landeskog - Forward played his first nhl game, and despite not scoring he looked very solid on both ends of the ice
1. Semyon Varlamov - I thought that Varlamov was the best player on the ice all night long, making save after save and keeping the avs in the game. I believe in Semyon, and he could have a very good year.

Misplay of the game - Jan Hedja's pinch and turnover for the wings 2nd goal, really the turning point in the game.

Peter Forsberg Number Retired Tonight

#21 Peter Forsberg joins #19 Joe Sakic, #33 Patrick Roy and #77 Ray Bourque in the rafters tonight, and as a longtime Avs fan this is simply a night of joy. I have been an Avs fan since they moved to Colorado, seen the good (2 cups, scoring titles etc) and bad (leg and groin injuries) of Peter's career, but what a fitting end to see #21 retired to the rafters. Forsberg was truly one of the alltime greats that played our game, one that was limited by injuries but never seemed to overshadow how good he was. Forsberg's list of accomplishments include the Calder Trophy in 1995, Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophy in 2003, and most importantly 2 Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. While Peter's career was certainly limited by injuries, the Swedish forward deserves to be in the HOF and certainly will get a look when he becomes eligible in 3 years. For now, Avs fans can rejoice and watch his number being retired to the Pepsi Centre rafters, joining a truly elite cast. Fellow Swedish forward (and 2nd overall pick) Gabriel Landeskog will be playing his first NHL game, the 18 year old who grew up idolizing Peter, “He was definitely my No. 1 idol,” Landeskog said. “He meant a lot for the game back home, going over here—he won the scoring title, won Stanley Cups, that sort of thing.
“His will to win was tremendous. I’m very excited for this night to come. It’s going to be a special one, for sure.” All Avs fans will be eager to see Landeskog play tonight, but truly this is Peter Forsberg's night and one to remember for everyone. Thank you Peter, you were truly and inspiration and amazing player to watch and what a fitting end to have #21 retired to the rafters.

Stefan Elliot sent down - Opening Night Roster Look

So after all that, both Elliot and Barrie will start the season in the AHL. It is completely evident to me that coach Sacco is emphasizing size over skill on the backend this year, and that might lead to less production out of the defence. However, with a healthy Peter Mueller the Avs can use him (along with EJ) on the point on the powerplay and thus the need for a high scoring defence isn't necessary. While I certainly thought one of Barrie/Elliot would make the team, it is evident that coach Sacco believes both D need more time to develop, as with most prospects. In other team news, Cumiskey, Olver and Yip all will start the season on the IR so it clears up the 23-man roster without having to make cuts immediately, however don't be surprised if Porter/Wilson get sent down (except I don't believe Wilson does, because with the Cumiskey injury the Avs have only 7 d including Wilson). Here's a look at the current Avs roster:

Forwards (16): Matt Duchene, T.J Galiardi, Milan Hejduk, David Jones, Chuck Kobasew, Gabriel Landeskog, Joakim Lindstrom, Jay McClement, Cody Mcleod, Peter Mueller, Marc Olver (IR), Kevin Porter, Paul Stastny, Daniel Winnik, Brandon Yip (IR)

Defence (8): Kyle Cumiskey (IR), Jan Hejda, Matt Hunwick, Erik Johnson, Shane O'Brien, Ryan O'Byrne, Kyle Quincey, Ryan Wilson

Goalies(2): Semyon Varlamov, J.S Giguere

Avalanche Recent Cuts and Final Roster Predictions

Earlier in the preseason, I noted the play of two rookies Brad Malone and Tyson Barrie, both whom I thought were fighting their way onto the opening night roster. However, the recent cuts say different and Barrie, Malone, Bordeleau (who also played a physical, hard hitting preseason) and Cann all were sent down to the minors. With the departure of Barrie, Stefan Elliot has pretty much secured his position on the team as I assumed at least 1 of the 2 highly touted defence prospects would make the team. With the roster trimmed down to 27, the Avs will be looking to make 4 more cuts to finalize their 23-man roster. The roster looks as follows with days left before the season opener Saturday:

Forwards (16): Matt Duchene, T.J Galiardi, Milan Hejduk, David Jones, Chuck Kobasew, Gabriel Landeskog, Joakim Lindstrom, Jay McClement, Cody Mcleod, Peter Mueller, Marc Olver, Kevin Porter, Paul Stastny, Daniel Winnik, Brandon Yip

Defence (9): Kyle Cumiskey, Stefan Elliot, Jan Hejda, Matt Hunwick, Erik Johnson, Shane O'Brien, Ryan O'Byrne, Kyle Quincey, Ryan Wilson

Goalies(2): Semyon Varlamov, J.S Giguere

Final Roster Predictions:

Forwards:
First Line: Peter Mueller Matt Duchene Milan Hejduk
Second Line: Joakim Lindstrom Paul Stastny David Jones
Third Line: T.J Galiardi Ryan O'Reilly Gabriel Landeskog
Fourth Line: Cody Mcleod Jay McClement Chuck Kobasew
Extras: Daniel Winnik, Brandon Yip
Cut: Marc Olver, Kevin Porter

Defence:
First Line: Erik Johnson Kyle Quincey
Second Line: Ryan O'Byrne Shane O'Brien
Third Line: Stefan Elliot Jan Hejda
Injured: Kyle Cumiskey
Extras: Ryan Wilson
Cut: Matt Hunwick

Goalies:
Starer: Semyon Varlamov
Backup: J.S Giguere

Final Thoughts: For me, the first 3 forward lines and the top 6 d are all cemented in place, but the 4th line/extra forwards and extra defence remain a question. At forward, I had Marc Olver and Kevin Porter cut, but they could easily compete for a job on the 4th line/extra forward. Jay McClement will be the 4th line centre, but after that the 2 open spots on the line and the extra forwards could easily be a dogfight between the remaining forwards. Olver, Porter, Yip, Mcleod, Kobasew and Winnik are all competing for the final 3-4 spots and we won't know for a few days who makes it and who doesn't. At defence, I had Matt Hunwick being cut because I believe the top 6 of Johnson, Quincey, O'Byrne, O'Brien, Elliot and Hejda all have earned their spots. The remaining battle at d is between 3 players: Cumiskey (who is still hurt), Hunwick and Wilson. While all three could fight for a position on the team, Cumisky is still hurt and will start the season on the IR. That leaves the final spot between Wilson and Hunwick and simply put the Avs are going bigger, tougher d this year and Hunwick just doesn't cut it. At goalie, the Avs are set with Varlamov and Giguere. I for one am really excited for opening night, as well as the final cuts to make the roster complete.
