Stefan Elliot sent down - Opening Night Roster Look

So after all that, both Elliot and Barrie will start the season in the AHL. It is completely evident to me that coach Sacco is emphasizing size over skill on the backend this year, and that might lead to less production out of the defence. However, with a healthy Peter Mueller the Avs can use him (along with EJ) on the point on the powerplay and thus the need for a high scoring defence isn't necessary. While I certainly thought one of Barrie/Elliot would make the team, it is evident that coach Sacco believes both D need more time to develop, as with most prospects. In other team news, Cumiskey, Olver and Yip all will start the season on the IR so it clears up the 23-man roster without having to make cuts immediately, however don't be surprised if Porter/Wilson get sent down (except I don't believe Wilson does, because with the Cumiskey injury the Avs have only 7 d including Wilson). Here's a look at the current Avs roster:

Forwards (16): Matt Duchene, T.J Galiardi, Milan Hejduk, David Jones, Chuck Kobasew, Gabriel Landeskog, Joakim Lindstrom, Jay McClement, Cody Mcleod, Peter Mueller, Marc Olver (IR), Kevin Porter, Paul Stastny, Daniel Winnik, Brandon Yip (IR)

Defence (8): Kyle Cumiskey (IR), Jan Hejda, Matt Hunwick, Erik Johnson, Shane O'Brien, Ryan O'Byrne, Kyle Quincey, Ryan Wilson

Goalies(2): Semyon Varlamov, J.S Giguere
