The Avs got some sweet revenge against Oilers tonight, a great team effort leading to a 4-2 win at home. Following an 8-2 rout on December 5th the Avs came out to prove something tonight, they new that they let the Oilers get the better of them last time and weren't going to let that happen again. The Avs now sit at 23-10-1 on the season with 47 points out of a possible 68. The Avs came out flying in this game, throwing everything at Devan Dubnyk who was up to the task. Taylor Hall would open the scoring for the 2nd straight meeting between the teams, as a nice pass by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins sent Hall in alone on Varlamov and made no mistake. The Oilers lead 1-0 after the 1st, however shots were 17-5 for the Avs. Late in the 1st Sam Gagner dealt a vicious cross-check to the face of Paul Statsny and was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct. To make it worse for the Oilers Taylor Hall was given an unsportsmanlike penalty at the end of the 1st, leading to a 2-minute 5 on 3 for the Avs to start the 2nd. The Avs made the Oilers pay as Tyson Barrie tied the game at 1 with a great slapshot past Dubnyk. The Oilers would take the lead later in the period, a nice play by Taylor Hall to force a turnover behind the net and he fed Nugent-Hopkins who tapped it into an open net. The Avs would respond 3 minutes later on a beautiful tic-tac-toe play from Duchene to MacKinnon to O'Reilly and past Dubnyk. With 2 minutes left in the 2nd Patrick Bordeleau took an interference penalty, but the Avs were the ones to take advantage as Max Talbot scored short-handed to put the Avs up 3-2. A great play by Marc-Andre Cliche to intercept a pass at hte blue-line, who went on a 2-on-1 with Talbot and made a great pass to Max for the goal. Shots were 13-10 for the Avs in the 2nd, and 30-15 overall. The 3rd period was a close one, both teams had their chances but Varlamov/Dubnyk were up to the task. Matt Duchene iced the goal with an empty-netter, his team-leading 16th goal of the season and 3rd point of the night. The Avs got 3 goals in 3 different ways in the 2nd; on the power-play, even strength and short-handed. Overall a great team effort by the Avs tonight, lead by Matt Duchene. The Avs definitely didn't have their best game, especially sitting back in the 3rd, but its the big 2 points that matters. A big win heading into a tough 3-game road trip against Los Angeles, San Jose and Chicago.
Sam Gagner 5-min major for cross-checking and a game misconduct, a big turning point for the Avs.
Three Stars:
3. Taylor Hall - Hall was the best Oiler on the ice tonight, scoring 1 goal and adding an assist.
2. Max Talbot - Talbot scored a huge goal for the Avs, a short-handed marker late in the 2nd which was the eventual game-winner
1. Matt Duchene - As is the case on most nights, Matt Duchene was the best Av on the ice tonight scoring 1 goal and adding 2 assists, his 3rd straight multi-point game.

Play of the Game - Ryan O'Reilly's goal gets it tonight, a great tic-tac-toe from Duchene to MacKinnon to O'Reilly to the back of the net: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKN2WbrxEag
